Nice is set to become the first city in the Provence–Alpes–Côte d’Azur region to host a pollinarium sentinelle, a specialised garden designed to anticipate peaks in allergenic pollen.

The installation is planned for 2026 on the Promenade du Paillon.

Already used in several French cities, the system involves planting around 50 to 100 carefully selected plant species in a single, monitored location.

By closely tracking their flowering cycles, specialists can predict when allergenic pollen will be released and alert healthcare professionals and allergy sufferers in advance.

According to the Association of Sentinel Pollinariums of France, early warnings help patients begin treatment sooner, improving its effectiveness.

The concept was first tested in Nantes in the early 2000s and has since been adopted by around 30 cities nationwide.

While specific details of the Nice site have yet to be confirmed, local authorities say the project forms part of the wider Paillon redevelopment and aims to improve public health monitoring in the city.
