Hi everyone! These mushrooms started growing on a tree in my garden. The tree is a cherry blossom type tree (I think) and it started growing mushrooms a couple months ago. The internet says that the tree could be decaying from the inside but I’m not sure

what to do, should I be concerned? I don’t know much about trees so any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

From what I’ve learnt on this sub, it definitely means it’s on its way out. How long? I can’t tell you that. But some trees in my mom’s yard have had mushrooms for 10-15 years or so and they’re still healthy. Good luck

Your tree is gone. The fungus recycles the dead wood into soil.

Those are likely turkey tail mushrooms. Edible. You can make tea out of them among other things.
Check the underside to differentiate between turkey tail and it non edible lookalike. Very easy to tell apart
I have a stump that grows them, it pick them off and dry them when they’re ready

Yes they feed off decaying wood. Will get many years of turkey tail from it

You should be more concerned about the “wound” on top 😉

ooooo you have a cool mushroom centerpiece in your garden now. Tree may try to cling to life, almost definitely won’t survive in the long run, but I would just let it be and plant something else nearby. Standing deadwood is awesome for the local ecology, as you’re starting to see. If redbuds are native in your area, that could be a better replacement with similar flowering.

Who butchered that tree is the question.

Definitely fungus from internal rot. Open cut allowed for the initial introduction. Just some turkey tail. I would however have a tree expert come take a look at the tree to see if it’s at risk of falling on the house or make that assessment yourself. Will most likely come down writhing the next 5 years if you get a good storm from what I can see in the photos.

I see very little in terms of “tree”.
