BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) – This year marks the fifth year of LIGHTS at Fernwood Botanical Garden.

“It’s just a really fun experience for all community members to come out, get some fresh air during the winter, walk around, enjoy an incredible nature-themed light display with other added activities,” said Elaine Rowland, park host at Fernwood Botanical Garden. “We’re really enjoying the fact that the weather cleared up enough so we can come outside and see the lights.”

The event draws families who return year after year. Mike Wells, a visitor, said his family makes the light display an annual tradition.

“We come here every year with our family as well as our new addition who’s three months old and he’s getting to enjoy the lights this year too,” Wells said. “We both remember doing lights with our families when we were little kids and we wanted to share that experience with our little ones now that we’re growing our own family.”

Wells said his children look forward to the event each year, including special treats that have become part of their tradition.

“They look forward to it every year. Every time we tell them we’re coming here, he knows that he gets a chocolate-covered pretzel every year too. So, something they really enjoy,” Wells said.

Rowland explained the mission behind the event extends beyond entertainment.

“We just want to create a new way for people to get out with their families and friends and loved ones, enjoy nature, enjoy the winter, and find a new way to experience the garden,” Rowland said. “It is our largest fundraiser, so all ticket sales go back into our programming and helping advance our mission of welcoming and inspiring every person to explore, discover, and connect with nature and one another.”

You can check out the lights through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026. For more information on hours and to purchase your tickets, click here!
