As autumn continues and temperatures drop further, rats increasingly seek shelter indoors, but there’s a straightforward method to prevent them from approaching your property. CJ Palmer, a pest control specialist and founder of Nature Guard Pest & Lawn, has noted that rodents possess an acute sense of smell, and exposing them to particular odours can prove overwhelming. He explained: “When dealing with a rat infestation, it is essential to understand effective methods of deterring them. One approach is to utilise odours that rats find repulsive, as they rely heavily on their sense of smell.”
These pests have limited eyesight, meaning they depend on their sense of smell to locate food and detect predators, steering clear of areas they cannot properly investigate through scent. Fortunately, expensive rat repellents aren’t necessary, as numerous natural deterrents can effectively keep these troublesome rodents away from your property and garden.
Peppermint
Peppermint stands out as one of the most effective natural solutions for repelling rodents, thanks to its sharp, spicy aroma, which naturally irritates both mice and rats.
CJ noted: “Peppermint oil is a non-toxic and environmentally friendly solution, making it a safe alternative to chemical rat repellents. It is derived from the peppermint plant, which contains high levels of menthol, a compound that rats find extremely unpleasant.
“When exposed to peppermint oil, rats experience a strong sensory aversion, causing them to avoid areas where the oil is present.”
Mint plants can be positioned throughout your garden, or cotton wool balls soaked in peppermint oil can be strategically placed around your property to deter rodents.
Remember to replace the cotton wool balls every week to maintain the scent’s potency, which should help prevent mice and rats from entering your premises.
Garlic
Whilst it may seem unusual, cultivating garlic or applying garlic oil around the garden offers another method to stop rodents from becoming a nuisance.
CJ explained: “As a natural rat repellent, garlic emits a powerful scent that is known to repel rats and other pests. Rats have a highly developed sense of smell, and the strong odour of garlic can be overwhelming for them. This makes garlic an effective deterrent in keeping rats away from certain areas.”
Whilst this aroma may be appetising to humans, it contains sulphur compounds that rats will steer clear of, as they irritate their nasal passages and cause discomfort.
This represents another straightforward approach to keeping rodents at bay. However, it’s advisable to apply garlic oil solutions exclusively in outdoor spaces rather than indoors, as the pungent smell can linger for a considerable time.
Eucalyptus
Rodents detest eucalyptus owing to its potent aroma, but it also possesses compounds that significantly irritate their nasal passages and discourage them from establishing nests in particular locations. CJ explained: “Eucalyptus trees are known for their oil-rich leaves, which contain a compound called eucalyptol. This compound is responsible for the characteristic scent of eucalyptus and is also known for its antimicrobial and insect-repellent properties.
“Eucalyptus essential oil, derived from the leaves of the tree, has been used for various purposes, including pest control.”
The process is simple: create a homemade spray using equal parts eucalyptus oil and water. Then apply the mixture around windows, doorways or any other areas of the home where rodents might enter, including cupboards and beneath furniture.
