Water is my go to for success (I guess I overwater soil). I would cut back the large root ball somewhat and make sure all of the potting mix is washed off before putting it in water-so soil might be the best option for the root ball and stem
PS I just read today that adding a drop of hydrogen peroxide to prop water adds oxygen and deters algae/rot
