Monty Don’s crucial tips for Christmas trees as festive season begins

This is at least the third time in as many weeks that his garden has been underwater.

Monty’s garden at Longmeadow, where he has presented his BBC programme from since 2011, was previously voted one of the UK’s most popular gardens on Instagram.

It has been admired for providing year-round colour and has an orchard with over 50 different varieties of apples. According to pomologists, apples do not particularly like flooding, however during the winter it can help build up thick ice to protect the apple buds against the colder weather.

Thankfully the longer term weather forecast for Herefordshire is that it will be drier and colder for the next week, with overnight frosts for Christmas Day, so a different challenge for gardeners including Monty.
