I’m trying to expose root flare on this tree that was planted too deep. I think I found the root flare but in order to keep the surrounding area of dirt leveled with the root flare level I would have to expose smaller roots that have grown closer to the surface. Right now my mulch ring area is like a very shallow bowl. Should I keep digging around to keep it leveled or stop where I am?

If the tree wasn’t planted that long ago, I would dig it up, add some fill dirt and amendments to the bottom of the hole, replant and water in deeply. The root flare is really just the part of the trunk that widens into the roots— you don’t need to see the actual roots above ground.
