I have 2 or 3 roots that I uncovered while digging for a new walkway next to the driveway. The roots are around 2 inches in width and 3 inches in height. I only need to remove (if possible) what is visible – anything in the dirt would stay.

Is it safe to do so?

Thanks to anyone in advance, appreciate it!

I’d avoid if possible. Adding more subbase to the sidewalk will reduce risk of any uplift.

Without a professional arborist designing it, doing it, and monitoring it no.

Make the walkway a gravel walkway

LoL yes you can remove those.

What’s the Q? If it will somehow kill the tree?

Google “tree root diagram” — of the many dozens of roots of this size and depth, your removing at most 5%, which a healthy tree will easily be able to compensate for.
