The state gave me over $8,000 to take out my grass, here are the before and after photos. Process was really simple and only cost about $5,000 doing some of the work myself, and paying for the more labor intensive parts. The edging i used ended up being a little wavy but overall I'm happy with it, and I use over 30% less water than before the change.

Huh. No wonder y’all have such high taxes over there.

    Hope you enjoy your yard.

Some places definitely shouldn’t have grass lawns.

    Looks good

I’d’ve told them to go ask someone else.

Alas, it’s your yard, so if you’re happy with it then I’m happy for you!

Congratulations on making a cool $3k!

I have nightmares exactly like this

    Looks decent.
The edging bugs the fuck out of me. I wouldnt be able to live with that.

Only 30% less water to look 100% more dystopian.

    Wild.

Are you adding plants soon? There are very few there.

  8. Thank you daddy government for the 3k allowance. I will proceed to be a good little citizen with my newfound “yard.”

I would love to do this in my SW FL front yard

I think once the plants are established and larger it will look really nice!!!

Thank you for helping the planet. What gardening zone are you? I would be a little nervous about all the dark rock around the plants – that could add a lot of heat. Otherwise, kudos to you and your family.

Looks very Arizona. I hate Arizona.

  13. I love what you’ve done here. Breath of fresh air. Nice work

Also: in this thread are people who don’t understand drought-resistant landscaping or how cool cactus/desert-scapes can be

This is a hellscape to me, but if you like it! It looks good, just not at all my taste. I need green things thriving around me to be happy 😂 this is more of a desert vibe.

We converted our lawn into an edible food forest and it uses less water than the grass did. So glad your state offers this incentive.

Doesn’t look natural enough for me but I’m glad you like it. Too many boarders and straight lines. The plans growing will help but it’s still strange.

How do you sign up for this program? This is awesome. I think it’s gonna look great as the plants get established. And I’m sure you’ll see lots of cool critters out there

lmao, this happened to me too. Built a new house, spent about $1k to build the sprinkler system and install the grass. City paid me $7k to remove it.

I get it saves water, but wouldn’t think create more heat compared to having grass ?

    Without greenery nature is depressing

All that rock and dg looks so hot. We did this same thing but with only a small dg path and dry creek bed. When it’s at its peak it looks fabulous and it’s so low maintenance. We actually made money when we did it because my wife found programs that paid for everything and paid per sq ft for the grass we didn’t put in.
