I picked them when it got down close to freezing a week or so ago. I put half in the windowsill and half in with a banana to test that theory. They’re all still rock hard and green! Anyone else having trouble with fall tomatoes?
Tomatoes need to be starting to change color a little to ripen. If they’re totally green, my understanding is that they won’t.

Fried green tomatoes are excellent.

No, it’s just gonna take a little bit longer. I used to put them in a paper bag on their stem end in a cool spot, it’ll be a few weeks. There was an old wives tale that you could put them atop red construction paper, but I was unconvinced it worked any better/faster than the paper bags.

I was told by my elderly neighbor to put them in a towel, and under a large bowl in total darkness to ripen and this worked!

Just wait longer. None of the tricks to make them ripen actually work. They’ll do it on their own time.

I put mine in single layer in a bunch of brown paper bags. I had a ton. Half turned red in the bag. Half didn’t. Made soup with the red ones and we shall see for the rest…

Put them in a brown paper bag and close the bag.

Thanks everyone, sounds like time and a paper bag are the keys.
