Why does lettuce fail so often — even when you think you’re doing everything right?
Bolting, bitterness, weak growth, and plants that never size up aren’t random problems. They’re almost always caused by a few overlooked mistakes.
In this video, I walk you through exactly why lettuce fails and show you how to grow it perfectly instead — from planting and spacing to watering, temperature control, and harvest timing.
Whether you’re growing lettuce in raised beds, containers, or in-ground, this guide will help you:
Prevent bolting before it starts
Grow fuller, sweeter lettuce
Avoid common beginner and expert mistakes
Harvest longer without plants turning bitter
If you’ve struggled with lettuce in the past, this video will change how you grow it.

Quick question for you: where do you grow lettuce — raised beds, containers, or in-ground?
I grow in containers !
🤔🤔🤔 how do you grow – round head lettuce ? ! !
I have peppers / hot – peppers / tomatoes / lettuce. No problem !
My head lettuce will only grow like leaf lettuce ! ? !
my lettuce (romaine), no matter what I do I get about a month out of it then it goes to bolt, its just too damn hot in Texas and nothing I do will stop it from bolting
Salanova premier collection in both green and red is my absolute favorite but it isn't the best in heat. So once it gets warm we switch to Muir and Adriana. Same in romaine it is Sunland and Coastal Star.
We are trialing a new iceberg lettuce called Pint Size this year and a little gem type called Bambi
We grow in ground on white Dewitt Sunbelt fabric and plants are transplanted in a 8×8 pattern. We prefer pelleted seeds to ease the sowing of just 1 seed per cell.
We can get away with cut and come again in spring but in summer we do a tray every 2 weeks.
This video came just in time for me. I got some lettuce seed sprouts a week ago and with this video I'll be ready for when they grow up. My tomato plants will finally have some company. 😀
I struggle with slugs on lettuce along with various other creepy crawlers when I harvest. So I built a dedicated raised bed away from the garden, on gravel, with fresh soil. Hoping for better success. I love Little Gem and all the butterhead types.
We love growing lettuce. This year I am sticking with 3 favorites in the garden, though I have about 15 varieties to choose from because it is so fun to try new ones. We are growing Buttercrunch, Mayan Jaguar, and Ice Queen. All 3 are so good!
Brian – Is there any way to SHUT OFF the access that the automatic license plate readers and other cameras and satelites have to your Reolink system???? In case you aren't aware the surveillance on American civilians big tech is helping themselves to by spying on homeowners through their own so called "camera security systems" is a gigantic problem! The data is shared with police departments all over and innocent homeowners are being confused with criminals and being charged with crimes they DID NOT commit due to misuse of the data by police departments. Never mind, robbers who know how can hack into it and determine when you are home or away so they can find the time it would be easiest to break into your house and take your stuff!!!!!!!
Pint size head lettuce, Coastal Romaine, and Green Ice leaf lettuce. I plant leaf las a cut and come again. I don't thin them.
This spring I'm going to try my hand at growing tennis ball lettuce and Tom Thumb lettuce. I have vertical Gardens along with garden beds and I am hoping the small variety will fit in my vertical Gardens well.
Is this an old video?? You don’t have any garden beds anymore…
Yahoo! Just in time!! Great reminders. Thank you!
Thank you Brian. ❄️🎄❄️💚🙃 JUST in case you don’t post another video before Christmas, Merry Christmas to you and your family. May you feel God love and peace this holiday season and for many seasons to come. 🤗 ❄️🎄❄️💚🙃
