Journey to the Château, Ep. 366 – In this episode, Patrick and Stuart work with friends Tony and Jane to begin the formal garden (parterre) around the fountain in the chateau court of honor. Patrick and Stuart relocate the large planters that were temporarily placed around the fountain. Tony and Jane work on their plan to stake out the geometric shapes of the enclosed beds and prepare for the metal framework. Patrick reveals the design of how the flower beds will be planted once the parterre is completed. Thank you to all of our supporters to help us reach 50,000 subscribers!

So this is a very exciting morning for us because It’s now starting. We will actually put the
paterre in the surround in because Tony made them for us that will go in outline the entire
thing and then we can get gravel delivered for the pathway and soil for the flower beds which
are actually going to be quite large. however, we need to move those planters. They’re
incredibly heavy. So, Wish us luck. Let’s go. So look at that. The pots are all where they should be and for the time being
because they represent what we want to do in the future and that is to on each side have
four linden trees or lime trees also called in England that are espalier. So where you see
the hedge behind me here it’s actually a fence with a Virginia creeper which is lovely.
above that basically will in front of it will be four espalier trees which will give us
a whole lovely wall of leaves in the summer. So that’s going to be interesting and we were
actually a bit concerned how this would work with the pots to transport them and eventually
that will end up in the backyard in the park. But right now there was it went so much better
than we expected. And now we can start with the around the fountain. So the contentious that looks
horrible, which it does, but why do a lot of work when it’s double and triple works. Now talking
about Le Notre again, the parterre that we’re building will be completely bordered by lavender.
And I’ve done that. The first time that I planted a parterre wasin 1990 or so in Germany and I had
completely surrounded the four beds with lavender and it’s really quite lovely. Now, lavender blooms
only about 4 to 6 weeks and then you have to cut that back quite severely. so to keep it in check
cuz otherwise you get old woodsy plants that look a bit scraggly but still have beautiful
flowers but that’s not what you want in a formal garden. You want a little compact hedge around
it. the roses that we have chosen are all old roses blooming multiple times and have a strong
scent. So it’s going to be a rose garden. And of course in the flowering sage they come in such
amazing varieties here and bloom basically from late March, early April to November or December
depending on the weather. we still have flowers of that them here and it’s really remarkable.
The pollinators are so bees and bumblebees and the hummingbird moth are on there all the time.
Let me show you. So this is the sage around our tower. We just planted them this spring and they
have bloomed till last week when we had this quite severe frost. come in all kinds of colors from
white to dark purple. and anything in between. It’s really, really nice. And that’s basically
the colors we have chosen for the front yard. One other thing that Tony is building is four
benches for each quadrant. There will be a bench so people can sit around the fountain. I think
that’s really really quite marvelous. We’re now starting Tony and Jane did the entire mathematics
how to work this out how long and then Tony prepped everything so that with the metal work
so that we can use that um to create the parterre So, it is gray. It’s raining and we’re
not working outside right now, but there’s plenty still to decorate.
So, we’re back inside. Um, God, I hope we’re going to be done soon. It’s a lot
of decorating to do. And thank you so much. We have now surpassed 50,000 subscribers. So,
that’s that’s phenomenal. And we’re really, really thrilled. Thanks for your support. Thanks
