*under an orange light*
There appears to be a lot of copepods (?) and a lot of dancing worms in the soil, but I’m not sure what this thing is… he lives underground and comes up to chomp at stuff.
I made two jars, one tall one with rocks at the bottom, and a short one with no rocks. Both had native underwater plants and both had the same setup otherwise. Same lighting as well.
The tall jar had tons of isopods and clear water but died almost instantly, with black detritus covering everything.
The short jar has brown detritus covering everything, but is teeming with life (only a few species), however has an orangish film of algae(?) on the water surface and is super murky.
What went wrong with the first one, and how is this one still alive? How can I fix the murky water?

Chironomid midge larva, aka bloodworm. The red color comes from hemoglobin, the same stuff that acts as an oxygen binding agent in human blood.
