KANEOHE, Hawaii (Island News) — The reopening date for Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden has been pushed back to early January as rainy weather caused delays to the garden road’s repaving project.

Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden, located on Luluku Road in Kaneohe, is scheduled to reopen to the public on Monday, Jan. 5, 2025. The road at the popular botanical garden is being repaved, but due heavy rain has delayed the project and extensive maintenance which was initially expected to be completed before Christmas.

Regular closures at the botanical garden will be in effect every Thursday starting on Jan. 8 once the garden reopens.

The closure will also impact the botanical garden’s recreational programs such as catch-and-release fishing and overnight camping. Fishing is expected to resume on Wednesday, Jan. 7 and permitted camping is expected to return on Friday, Jan. 9.

“We greatly appreciate the continued patience of garden visitors and the surrounding community as we make these crucial improvements to this heavily used road,” the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation said in a news release.

For more information or updates on the repaving project, contact Hoʻomaluhia’s staff at HoomaluhiaBG@honolulu.gov or 808-768-8942.
