THE FOLLOWING IS A  U OF I EXTENSION RELEASE

DANVILLE, Ill. — The University of Illinois Extension Vermilion County Master Gardener program recognized outstanding community partners during its annual awards banquet Dec. 4 at the Danville Public Library.

The banquet honored individuals and organizations whose ongoing support, collaboration and dedication help Master Gardeners extend research-based horticulture education and community gardening efforts throughout Vermilion County.

“These community partners are essential to the success of our Master Gardener program,” said Jenney Hanrahan, Illinois Extension educator. “Their willingness to share time, resources, and talents allows our volunteers to reach more people, strengthen educational gardens, and make a lasting impact across the county.”

Several individuals were recognized as 2025 Friends of a Master Gardener for their exceptional contributions.

Cory Kyger of the Danville Public Library was honored for his hands-on support of the library garden. Kyger goes above and beyond his position by ensuring plants are consistently watered through a weekly schedule and by addressing the needs of volunteers.

Bob Mitchell was recognized for his unwavering support of the Kennekuk Herb Garden and Master Gardener volunteer Kasi Mitchell. In 2025, Mitchell ensured Kasi could continue contributing despite medical challenges by attending monthly Master Gardener meetings with her, providing transportation to Sunrise Nursery for collaboration with the herb garden team, and delivering plants for the Master Gardener May Plant Sale and produce for Garden Share.

Dennis and Jeanna LeCount were honored for their transformative work at the Danville Demonstration Garden. Dennis provided equipment, including a tractor, to help volunteers prepare garden spaces, making it possible for Kenneth D. Bailey Academy students to plant a cutting garden. Together, the LeCounts regularly bring their own tools and equipment to support projects, contribute ideas at monthly meetings, and assist with events.

Dana Winn and Debbie Owens of CRIS Garden Share were recognized for their leadership and dedication to the Garden Share program. For the past three years, they have coordinated advertising, set up weekly operations, and reached out to local businesses and organizations for donations.

Mrs. Mitzi Campbell, principal at Kenneth D. Bailey Academy (KDBA) in Danville, was honored for her longstanding partnership with the Master Gardener program. She supports hands-on horticulture learning by ensuring students have transportation to visit Danville Gardens and the VA Greenhouse, providing meaningful field trip experiences year after year.

Mrs. Kayla Nixon, a KDBA teacher, received recognition for her collaborative work with Master Gardeners on student gardening education. Nixon coordinates lesson themes, schedules classes, and incorporates student artwork, including vinyl garden signage created for the garden’s May planting day.

Jessica Hackman, a KDBA high school teacher, was also recognized for her active involvement with the Danville Demonstration Garden. In 2025, Hackman guided students in growing plants from seed for the cut flower bed, designed educational garden signage, and led art projects, including painted stepping stones and plant tags.
