Are they stiffened in any way, or are they just the sack? I might have to steal that idea!!

Cloth pots are definitely the way. Be sure to throw a drip tray under if using dirt directly into them but they really help establish a wet/dry cycle. These are cute!

I just use burlap bags right off the back of donkeys I have in my front yard.
