Sometimes you need to protect your trees from animals. I had to make little cages from hardware cloth (metal mesh) to protect the trunks of my maples. Some rodents, chipmunks I assume, had taken chunks out of the trunks. This year they got my big p. afra for the first time. 🙄
For you, maybe fence in a small area for the trees using hardware cloth or chicken wire. I kinda doubt squirrels but maybe.

This is why I am afraid of putting trees in the ground. I just grow them slowly from seed or cuttings, and it’s going very well.

There are plenty of dormant buds left at the nodes, so it’ll leaf out fine in the spring. You’ll want to set up some physical exclusion measures to protect it from further damage, though.

Bunnies I would bet. If you can get some cedar blocks and stack them 3 high I’ve seen that work to keep them off.

Definitely rabbits. The cuts are sharp and at an angle. Deer leave more “rough” chew marks. The rabbits might also chew the trunk, especially if they nest under your trees. If you can’t make a barrier or move the tree, you could try putting some mothballs around it to deter them too.
