Garden City hangs on against THS
THS had its chances to pull ahead against Garden City on Friday in the consolation semifinals, but a fourth-quarter run thwarted the Chieftains’ bid for the team’s first victory of the season. The Buffaloes, won, 68-59.
Tonganoxie led at one point in the first quarter, 14-11, but GCHS went on a 17-1 run and led, 28-15, before THS rattled off four straight points.
GCHS led, 32-20, at halftime, but Tonganoxie would battle back. Tonganoxie trimmed the lead to one at 51-50 with about 7:20 left in the game. The score would remain there for about 2 minutes, but the Buffaloes would get the momentum back. The Chieftains just didn’t have another rally in the tank after that.
It marked a big game for THS senior Lachlan McRae, who scored a career-high 31 points against the Buffaloes in the loss.
He averaged 26 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists during the three-day tournament.
The boys capped off the tournament with an 85-71 victory Saturday against Lakin. The victory moved THS to 1-3 on the season. The squad finished out the regular season Tuesday at Spring Hill after The Mirror’s print deadline.
THS coach KC Simmons thought his team got quality time out of the adventure in southwest Kansas.
“The trip to Garden City was a good experience on and off the court,” Simmons said. “Kids really enjoyed the trip due to the van rides, hotel stay, dining out, and just overall team camaraderie.
“On the court we got more experience for some younger kids and being in competitive games always helps speed up player and team development regardless of the outcome. I liked the way we fought back against Scott City & Garden City after falling behind big early, we just have to find a way to play an entire 32 minutes.
