Collected 2 acorns from an oak near me in august (it got windy and knocked lots of them loose early), planted them, put them in my greenhouse and just left them to do their thing, thinking they'd chill until spring. Checked on them at the start of december and lo and behold, they'd started sprouting. This is a picture of one of them today. The other is just popping through the soil…and yes, they're now inside under grow lights!

Is it a white oak because they sometimes do sprout in the fall
I suspect it’s just a result of the environment. I’ve got a bunch of early arrivals too, the cold dip we had in the UK followed by the unseasonably warm period has set off some of my fruit trees into blossom, and some bulb flowers are emerging too. But I’m cold stratifying in the fridge this year for more reliable temperatures.
