On a visit to California saw trucks loaded with snow hauling it to lower elevations to surround their Apple trees to “reset” them, or at least that was the story I was t9ld.
(How) Does the tree's exposure to unobstructed 'clear sky' work to influence / satisfy "Chill-Hour" requirements ?
We live in a Los Angeles 'microclimate' – pressed deep-enough into the north-facing side of the Hollywood foothills that up-slope neighbors' trees shade our narrow back yard that we get little/no direct sunlight on the ground between mid-Oct & mid-Feb.
We only have a few Freeze-Warning nights per year that need me to tent potted citrus trees against frost damage – while getting adequate sub-45-degree temp dormant season Chill-Hours to support good flowering (and fair-to-good fruit-set) on apple, pear & stone fruit trees which run the Chill-Hour gamut between 300- and 800 hrs.

How does one determine MAX chill hours? This is my problem in AK
Are the store (big box like Home Depot and Lowes) sold varieties more versatile or already chosen for the area in which they are sold???
