I started this Kabudachi Amur Maple in spring of 2024 from seedlings. All but one trunk has firmly fused. Don’t know if full-on inosculation is happening yet or not though.

My intended design is not for this to be multiple stems emerging from the ground, but rather to use the clumping to achieve an interesting trunk with accelerated thickness. My target root base is about 2” below the soil.

However, whether the goal will prove achievable will be determined in spring, when I finally repot as it begins its third season. At that point I will see:
1. Whether wire bite from binding the trunks together has ruined the appearance of the fused trunk,
2. Whether the trunks are sufficiently fused to survive unbound, and
3. Whether the original nebari is in a usable state.

I’m sure that many new roots have sprung up all along the trunk so those will need to be removed. But I’m eager for spring to come so I can get this work done, which has made for a very impatient past two years.

Side note: Amurs have always been my first leaves to emerge out of all my trees. Love them for that!
