This is one of two main limbs on an old and very productive avocado tree. Would love to save it if possible.

The wound faces upwards and collects water. Should I be trying to prevent this somehow?

Many thanks

Nah, it’s fine. Leave it be for the most part. If it’s getting too heavy clip some end weight off. Don’t paint it or seal it. It’s doing its thing and has almost closed the wound

People on this sub are going to give you the cold, clinical, non-avocado loving answer here. But that limb prolly cranks out a $100 worth of avocados every year. I would try to save it

Maybe put some tall stakes in the ground supporting it under the “elbow”, with like bike tire hammock working like a sling.

Keep it tight, no slack under the limb. When the wind blows and the branch dips you want it to take up some of the load

It’s not gonna be pretty. It’s not gonna last forever. But fuck it, free avocados.

You can make some sort of a roof from wood that would prevent water pooling there, but will keep the air ventilating.

But seeing as there is new callus growth, the tree will close the wound soon

Yeah it should be fine maybe just take a paper towel and try soak up the excess water when it gets wet

Try clean up any dirt in the wound too

If it is getting too heavy, consider making a crutch
