Last week, I picked up a couple 'Nosferatu' daylilies on 50% off clearance at Lowe's.
Even though I'm not a fan of daylilies, I spotted this eye-catching one with the purple/magenta blooms a couple weeks earlier at full price and almost gave in then. So glad I waited. One plant can easily be divided into two plants, the other was just a single, but healthy. Three total plants for the price of one.
I watched a few videos on cleaning up daylilies after they're done blooming. I think that influenced me to try the plant again.
Don't like the strappy, browning foliage? Cut them back to about 6".
I scored a couple grasses on clearance about a month earlier. 'Heavy Metal'. Wasn't even thinking about purchasing some ornamental grass, but I always check the Clearance area and this grass was a great price at 50% off. I planted them up right away (that's the key to success) and I'm very pleased by the "wall effect" they provide between my carefully curated garden and the run-of-the-mill hosta row backing it in my neighbor's garden.
25 years ago I bought a grafted paniculata hydrangea standard from a grocery store garden center near closeout for $20! It flowers beautifully every year. Our local nursery sells them for $170.
I bought an encore azalea to plant in fall and it was ok from clearance rack but now it’s dying on me. Oh well. I hear you can’t return clearance plants.
I just started the video and you have me hooked when I saw you chopping that plants roots in half! Yeash!!!
I purchased a beautiful weigela from a grocery store garden center for $5. It looked very sad when I brought it home. I planted it and gave in some fertilizer. Twenty years later It is now a beautiful shrub on the corner of our house with beautiful pink blooms.
I rescued a small clematis from Home Depot a few years ago. Not quite sure of the variety as it was missing it's tag. I paid 2.00 for it and it has thrived!
I always shop the clearance racks. You are 100% it's hit or miss. Found some great buys though. The plants just needed a little TLC and they are fine now that they are planted.
Another great video Steph. Your store has a great selection. Great tips. I haven’t been to my Lowe’s garden center in a few months. I need to go tomorrow.
Love this video! I do most of my shopping for my garden in the clearance racks! Thank you for showing us how to divide as well. I was afraid to do this at first, but I got alot of plants of it. I am getting married in my backyard this weekend! Aug 16th! and I need a way to make my budget stretch. I used all your tips and my backyard looks gorgeous! Thanks for making my wedding look so beautiful!
I recently snagged a chaste tree 50% off and repotted it only to find a smaller chaste tree beside it with its own little root system. I got two plants for $7 each. Now I just have to figure out where to put it. 😅
Divide new plants to save money. ❤
I did it last year with millennium alliums and they came back full sized this year. Great idea!
Found a Double Yellow Coreopsis at Lowe’s for $3 a few years ago in the fall on clearance and it’s one of my very favorite perennials.
The clearance rack is always my first stop when I go to Lowe's. I have saved and divided many plants. Love all the tips.
Great video ❤ Thank you 🌼
A few months ago i saw some dried up marigolds on clearance. On a whim i decided to give them a try. With only a little bit of attention they turned absolutely lovely. Honestly i just potted them up and put them in a sunny spot. Our rainy climate did the rest. Beautiful and healthy and add a great pop of color to my herbs bed.
That is an amazing garden clearance! 🙂
Hi Steph! Another great video. Thanks! I’m hoping you might be able to discuss when and how you move perennials that you had in containers out into your flowerbeds or how you winter them over. This is the first year that I’ve had quite a few in containers And I’m wondering how or if I need to move them. Thanks so much for considering! Have a great day!
I use to only fill my beds with clearance plants. But I have noticed, Lowes has raised the prices on the clearance plants. Use to, 5 dollars maybe 7 dollars was the MAX they would have for the clearance plants. Now they have a set price list. So anything that would be more expensive is only 50% off. So your running the risk of still paying a lot of money for a plant they will not guarantee for it to grow/come back the next year. It bothers me that they would rather toss items in the dumpster than sell a 25 dollar clearance plant cheaper than 12.50. But I still check them racks every time I go there. Because it has gotten so expensive to plant out flowers and other plants. And that is the same at all the big box stores.
This is a great video that shows great tips.
I got 2 blackberries and a raspberry plant on clearance and I repotted them and took off the dead leaves and now they are thriving! Hopefully next year I get some fruit 😍
I bought a littte 1 gallon evergreen (juniper) one early September for $4. It had one little brown branch. Popped it in next to my red Japanese maple and it took off! The chartreuse color really pops against the red. It's now 2' high x 3' wide. Healthy and vigorous.
Our Home Depot never has a clearance rack.
The Walmart near me took all the plants away and all that's left us soil and that's not even on sale yet period I've been told 2 weeks ago all they had with succulence and I don't really do suck it once that well period and then I see at the menards of The Home Depot stuff on sale but then I don't have spots for it so I don't know what to do for it
I check the clearance racks regularly and look for the biggest plant that I can divide. I always cut the Grasses in half when I buy them. I recently bought plants that were buy 2 and get one free. Great advise. I always refer to those racks as death Row
such great information thank you so much
The first place I go at the garden centers. Some of my best plants have come from clearance!
Hi Steph! Thanks so much for all the great content! I garden in southwestern Rhode Island and have learned sooooo much about gardening in our area by binge watching your videos for the past year.
When planting, my current routine is Bio Tone and a fertilizer tablet in the hole with the plant, backfill then a sprinkle of Plant Tone or Flower Tone around the drip line of the plant. I’ve had AMAZING results with this method.
QUESTION… Should I still work slow release fertilizer in when planting a clearance perennial in the fall?
I was lucky enough to find a Kintzley’s Ghost on clearance (MAJOR SCORE!!!) and I want to give it the best chance possible.
I shop clearance and have gotten several plants to revive and do well.
Fantastic tips! Thanks!
