Many gardeners, particularly if their greenery is hit by the seemingly constant rain in Herefordshire, bemoan this time of year.
And the BBC TV presenter has not escaped the wet weather, sharing pictures of his famous garden disappearing under water in recent weeks.
But Monty who has been lead presenter of Gardener’s World since 2003 and since 2011 has presented the programme from his own garden, Longmeadow, in Herefordshire says it is a season to cherish.
He told followers: “What I like about the winter garden is its simplicity. People often talk about the ‘bones’ of a garden but that essential simplicity can be soft, almost hazy as well as structural.”

The gardener particularly celebrated the Hornbeam tree, the hardy specimen which offers cover during the colder months. He told his 1.3 million followers on Instagram that Beech hedges, which thrived on the chalky Hampshire soil where he was previously living, do not thrive in heavy wet Herefordshire clay.
He wrote: “Beech languishes whereas Hornbeam is completely at home and the tawny, milky coffee colour of hornbeam is the most vivid element of the garden between November and April.”
