Community members came together to plant two new pollinator gardens in Del Mar Mesa this month, one at Elizabeth Rabbitt Park and another along the trail off Carmel Country Road near Gallop Crest Court.

According to a news release from the Friends of Del Mar Mesa and Del Mar Mesa Garden Club, each plant in the gardens was selected to showcase the region’s native flora, each offering resilience in drought- and fire-prone seasons and an ability to attract pollinators. In total, nearly 225 native pollinator plants representing more than 30 Southern California species were planted, creating a rich diversity of food sources and shelter for local birds, bees, and butterflies.

“We extend heartfelt thanks to all who helped make these gardens a reality, and for making our community a space for all creatures great and small,” said Friends of Del Mar Mesa/Del Mar Mesa Garden Club in the news release.

Garden Club member and neighbor Wendy Poyhone has led the effort for the pollinator garden at Elizabeth Rabbitt Park  for several years.

“This garden has been a dream of mine for a long time, and seeing it come to life with our neighbors’ support has been incredibly meaningful,” Poyhone said in the news release.

The Rabbitt Park project grew through collaboration with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, with support from Park Manager Jamie Diaz. According to the news release, the project would not have been possible without landscape designer Lisa Goldman, and contributions from David Salonius, Steve Palle, generous neighbors and the planting hands of many, including Masumi Parekh and her kids. The habitat restoration was done in support of San Diego’s Senior Park Ranger Gina Washington.

The second garden along Carmel Country Road near Alta Del Mar continues Friends of Del Mar Mesa’s mission of “caring for local open space and restoring the coastal sage scrub habitat that defines this extraordinary landscape.”

Signage will soon be added to make the gardens even more fun and interactive for visitors.

The Del Mar Mesa Garden Club promotes education in backyard gardening, homegrown vegetables and fruits, sustainable living, and wellness through an energized, positive, and friendly garden community. The club hosts monthly speakers at the Carmel Valley Library, workshops, and nature-inspired gatherings. They stock a free seed library at the Carmel Valley Library and provide a seasonal display at the Ocean Air Recreation Center.
