I'm in the process of buying a house which is currently vacant. I noticed this hole has appeared at some point within the past couple of weeks. It appears to be bidirectional from the opening in the ground, one way going underneath the patio.

I was able to put a camera nearby for two/three days and didn't obviously see anything using the hole. Loose leaves are slowly beginning to accumulate and appear undisturbed making me think it's not actually being used.

Hole is approx 1-1.5ft length, 0.5-1ft wide and less 1ft deep, no loose dirt/evidence of excavated earth around/in the hole.

Wondering what could have dug/caused the hole and if there are any considerations regarding filling the hole in except for earth/top soil & compacting down.

Thanks in advance!

Looks more eroded away from water to me. Where does the water on that patio flagged area pool towards. My money is this corner.

Rats, they have had a bumper year and are being a massive nuisance now.

Stamp the soil in and see if they dig it back out, you will notice pretty quickly if they’re still using it.

Vacant house in the winter, bound to be rats. If you put down poison keep pets and children well away from the area
