The fire broke out in the early hours at Hayes Garden Land in Bogend, Ayrshire.
Hayes Garden Land, which started as a family-run business, confirmed on social media that the centre and its café have been destroyed by the fire.
In a statement, it said: “We regret to inform you that we will be CLOSED for the foreseeable future – the Garden Centre & Cafe have burned down.”
Peter Hayes and his son Michael developed the site in Symington in 1988, building on a business that began in the Lake District.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that it was alerted to the fire at around 2.16am.
Three fire appliances and a high-reach appliance were dispatched to the scene.
As of the time of writing, one appliance and the high-reach vehicle remained on-site.
Hundreds of tributes have since poured in from devastated customers.
One person wrote on Facebook: “So sorry to read this was a lovely place, always busy. Thoughts are with you all.”
Another added: “Omg that is awful, I’m truly gutted.”
A third person commented: “Dreadful news, hope you are all ok, what a terrible shame.”
