Hayes Garden Land, at Symington south of Kilmarnock, said on social media on Monday morning that the blaze means they will be closed “for the foreseeable future”.

They also shared an image of multiple fire appliances battling the blaze, with smoke billowing from the roof of the centre.

“We regret to inform you that we will be CLOSED for the foreseeable future – the garden centre and cafe have burned down,” a spokesperson wrote.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been asked for an update.

The news has been met with shock online, with one user responding: “Can’t quite believe what I’m reading. This was such a great place to go for breakfast/lunch and a wander.

“My heart goes out to all the lovely staff who worked there. Let’s hope you can recover from this tragic situation.”

Another added: “This is tragic. The best garden centre around and cafe is amazing. Thinking of you all. Hope you manage to get it up and running again. We are thinking of you.”

According to the Hayes website, the site at Symington was set up in 1988 by father and son team Peter and Michael Hayes.

The website adds: “Hayes Garden Land is a long established family run business that started life in the Lake District whose roots can be traced back over 200 years.”
