It has to do with the plant storing water. It’ll add or take away ribs sometimes depending on the environmental/watering conditions. Basically they will drop ribs to prevent too much water loss, as well as protect or help in different environmental conditions like direct or indirect sunlight(gives them more or less area to do photosynthesis).
