Both photos of same plant shifting ribs. Interesting as to why cacti shift ribs Fibonacci sequence anyone?

  1. It has to do with the plant storing water. It’ll add or take away ribs sometimes depending on the environmental/watering conditions. Basically they will drop ribs to prevent too much water loss, as well as protect or help in different environmental conditions like direct or indirect sunlight(gives them more or less area to do photosynthesis).

    Most typically happens due to changes in environment, but there are genetic mutations in some cacti that cause consistent shifting like with PPK61
