Hiya
A couple weeks ago I noticed this tree has a (poorly executed but still recognisable) swastika and some other symbol carved into it. Friends reckon the other symbol is some bastardized mystic Norse rune probably with some white supremacist meaning, given the context, though we can't find an exact match online. I was gunna try and ignore it, but most of the point of these kinds of things is to push the boundaries of what is tolerated in a neighbourhood. So perhaps let's not. It's important that things get removed.

Not sure when it appeared, as it's not on the pedestrian side of the street and it's easy to miss if you aren't looking, but easy to see if you are. It's a cul de sac but people do do Halloween here so idk how much I should side eye the neighbours.

I haven't asked the council about it because I assume the most efficient solution for the council would be to just chop the tree down, or chop a big bit of it off.

Not sure what kind of tree.

Location: New Zealand
Currently summer

Bark seems thin.
Should I just scratch over it a bunch? What minimally damaging options are there?

  1. Make them into 4 squares, like a window shape. Minimal extra cuts needed.

Personally I’d just remove a square of bark, it’ll heal

You don’t have to scratch over it *a bunch*. You could strategically and artistically make it into some other design. Simplest would be four squares. You could probably find an artist to make some cool looking design

Maybe you can paint over it. Look into what kind of paint can be used safely on trees. If it’s a long lasting paint, then by the time it’s coming off, the tree will have largely healed over those. Luckily those are not carved deep. Get a light grey paint that won’t be obvious from a distance.

Or maybe I’m wrong and paint would inhibit the bark growth. I don’t think so, though, since we have all seen plenty of trees with paint on them that don’t seem to be bothered or scarred by it, eg those trail blaze marks.

Research the indian swastika and add designs that make it more original than when the nazis stole it

Make it something else, like a box

If this is your biggest problem you’re a lucky person. Tree will heal or as said a little sanding and you’re done.

I’d connect the dots and obscure it

Then it into a Microsoft windows logo instead
