A woman from Barking was ordered to pay more than £1,000 after refusing to clear her ‘eyesore’ garden. Local residents were left frustrated by their neighbour’s front patio which was filled with black bags, plastic wrapping, cardboard boxes and wood.

Miss Megan Otero, of Dawson Avenue, was visited by officers in February, before she was served a warning letter and community protection notice. She took no action and was found to be in breach of the notice.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Residents told us they wanted cleaner, tidier streets and gardens – and we’re listening.

“Through our Cleaner BD campaign, we’re taking action against those who ignore the rules. It starts here, with all of us working together to keep our borough looking its best.”

The case was heard at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on December 2 this year, where the court imposed a £140 fine. She was also ordered to pay £872 in costs, and a £56 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £1,068.

Anyone who is aware of an eyesore garden should report it to the council online. There is also an online pledge for residents to sign to promise to keep the borough clean .
