December is still a prime time for pottering about in the garden. Indeed, there’s a whole host of veg seeds that’ll thrive if you begin now.

One green-fingered enthusiast, known as @allotmentality on TikTok and followed by 12,600 fans, has revealed the three must-sow veggie seeds for this month – assuming “you’re not already burnt out from gardening at this time of the year”. In her video, she advised: “So if you want to keep growing, now’s a good time to start winter hardy varieties of peas. I like to start mine indoors in egg boxes which are obviously biodegradable so it’s easy to transplant them once germinated. I literally just plant out the whole box directly into the ground.”

But peas aren’t the only game in town – she also gives a big thumbs up to broad beans.

She added: “In milder climates like where I am in the south of England, you can get away with starting them now. Just make sure to choose an autumn sown variety.

“I’m sowing mine in another biodegradable receptacle – loo roll tubes, every gardener’s favourite right? By the way, if you struggle to keep these watered, apparently if you fill them up to the brim it should stop the cardboard from wicking water away from the plant.

“Broad beans will germinate in temperatures as low as 5 degrees celsius, so I’m starting mine in an unheated greenhouse. And finally, if the ground isn’t frozen or too soggy it’s not too late to start garlic and overwinding onions from sets.”

And last but not least, garlic is a top pick for this season.

Drawing on her own gardening journey, she revealed: “Last year, I planted my garlic in the second half of December and I still got a good harvest in the summer.

“As for onion sets, they are immature onion bulbs that are quicker to grown than starting onions from seed. All you need to do is push them into the soil so that only the pointy tip sticks out and voila! That’s it for December, happy sowing.”

Why does December gardening matter?

Getting a few seeds in the ground during this period allows you to concentrate on winter preparations, establishing cold-hardy varieties and bare-root specimens.

It’s also the perfect time to get organised for spring by sorting through seed packets and sprucing up your gardening kit, setting yourself up for a bumper year ahead while your summer favourites take their well-earned rest.
