I bought a property (SoCal) with some Valencia orange trees on it. They seem to have been overtaken my the root stock (bitter orange)

The trees are producing Valencia oranges

I marked the branches / part of trunk that are the bitter orange w orange tape (and the Valencia with green) and trimmed the bitter orange branches back

Don’t want to kill the tree – Where do I go from here?

Personally id honestly just cut my losses even if you do manage to not kill it cutting all of that back the scarring alone will be a nightmare ( multiple massive wounds which will be entrance points for pests, mold/fungi, pathogens, etc.) Plus it will structurally always be a weak point in the tree and the rootstock will likely continue to try taking over again because its gotten so vigorous.

I think I’m going to second just replacing it. The rootstock will just keep resprouting a lot at this point and will be a pain to deal with, and the scion doesn’t look that developed so it isn’t a huge loss.
