Expert Alan Titchmarsh has named the one plant every garden should have in December – and he promised that you will be “stopped in your tracks” by the incredible smell of it. The TV presenter released a video on his YouTube page explaining how the plant would “transform your dull winter garden”. However, despite lavishing praise on it, he acknowledged that it might not look the most appealing.

Speaking to his 85,000 subscribers, the Love Your Garden presenter said from his Hampshire home: “Here, I am majoring on both winter colour and winter scent. And the one plant that is going to give you scent like no other in winter, you will probably think looks extremely boring! This is it.”

He then unveiled the Saraoccocca confusa plant and explained: “This is Saracocca, the Christmas Box, and if you look at the flower buds, these green flower buds, you will see its potential because when these open they turn into white whiskery flowers.

“Still not much to look at but I am not kidding when I say the scent will stop you in your tracks. It is the most fabulous plant. It should be in every garden.”

Alan concluded: “It is not a sort of headliner, a centerpiece, but in the corner here it will offer me a bit of height at one end of this trough.”

After posting the video, which you can watch in full here, one fan replied: “There is nothing like a good scented container in the dull cold winter to go with my lit by Xmas lights garden. I do love to be alive.”

Another said: “Thanks for showing us this tip, beautiful garden Alan.”

Despite having joined YouTube earlier this year, Alan is still a regular on TV, and this weekend he will appear on ITVs Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh.

On the show, which airs on Sunday from 9.30am, he will be joined on Manor Farm by actress Lesley Joseph, Blur’s Alex James and Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank.

The celebrated television presenter and gardner turned 76 in May and the proud Yorkshireman spoke to us about appreciating his good fortune.

Alan, who first became famous after being on BBC’s Nationwide as a horticulture expert, said: “I owe everything to good luck and a following wind! I love my work, I love being outdoors in my garden, I have a hugely supportive family. I enjoy my food and drink – in moderation of course – and above all I laugh a lot. It’s worked for me.”
