Over the years, listeners have begged us for the secret to healthy, productive citrus trees. Well, here it is!
The Citrus Care Routine
Early June
Apply a generous amount of complete citrus and fruit tree fertilizer, or use a pelleted organic fertilizer supplemented with rock minerals or trace elements. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended rates.Every three years, add 10g of zinc sulphate. Dissolve in a watering can and apply around the roots or spray onto foliage (depending on the product instructions).
Late June (every second year)
Sprinkle 200g of dolomite and 100g of gypsum around the soil at the perimeter of the leaf canopy.
August
Repeat the application of complete citrus and fruit tree fertilizer or organic alternative with added minerals.
November
Apply the same fertilizer routine again to support summer growth.
March
Give a light application of complete citrus and fruit tree fertilizer or organic fertilizer (no extra minerals needed).Extra Tips for SuccessAlways apply fertilizer to well-watered trees and water again after application.Fertilizer can be applied over mulch — just water it in thoroughly.Homemade compost can be added anytime for extra organic matter.Water regularly through spring and summer.Avoid overly thick mulch, which encourages shallow roots.Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.Simple plant-based oil sprays will control most pests.For potted citrus, reduce quantities according to product directions.Adjust timing if you live in cooler regions.
