Hi everyone,
I need some help identifying a problem on my Dracaena marginata ‘Sunray’.

Problem description:
Small round brown crusty spots have appeared on the leaves.

  • They are flat, dry, and hard
  • Each one has a slightly raised yellow/white center
  • They are attached to the leaves, but come off easily when scraped with a fingernail
  • Some leave a small mark after removal, others leave almost no mark
  • They are completely dry, and there is no insect or bug underneath

I never saw any crawling insects on the plant before or after these crusts appeared.

My questions:

  • What are these crusts called?
  • What caused them / where did they come from?
  • How did they appear?
  • How can I treat this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Scale insects. I had a dracaena marginata that came with them. I worked for MONTHS trying to rid it of them. Every time I thought it was over, they were back. I eventually trashed it.
