Hello everyone!
I need some advice on cleaning the driveway/path to my house, which is made of these hexagonal stone pavers. As you can see in the photo, grass and weeds grow vigorously in the joints because there is no mortar or grout between them—it's just dirt/soil.

Trimming this area has become extremely difficult. The nylon string on my trimmer (weed eater) is ineffective, and using a 3-point metal blade is also tricky on this surface.

I'd like to know the best way to clean and maintain this path. Do you recommend a specific type of herbicide, a manual weeding tool, or a permanent solution for the gaps (like filling them with sand, fine gravel, or some other material)?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It’s a large area so this might be a little bit difficult but boiling water will kill the weeds completely dead. Maybe you could just start boiling pot after pot after a pot of water and pour it on there it will kill everything

You can also scrape the grass that is higher, than the stone with a flat shovel. It’s a great arm and back workout. Then use fire on the roots. Prepare yourself, that you have to repeat the fire process 3x a year for at least 3 years.

I like how it looks growing through the pavers tbh. I’d just mow over it and make sure the sides of the driveway are clean and straight with an edger or trimmer.

Power washer, boiling water, or maybe vinegar (that’s what my parents use)

Mowing would make it look more intentional.

Flame thrower that son of a bitch and you’re off to the races friend!

If you want it to last, you’ll need to power wash all the cracks and then reapply polymeric sand. You’ll need a plate compactor to pound it into the cracks.

I would start with a weed burner then let it die for a couple of days then power wash.

Powerwashing below grade will loosen or remove most plant material. Hand-pick the remaining material with a screwdriver, then backfill the entire area with crushed granite. Pack the granite in around the pavers. Weeds can’t root into granite. I like Fire too.

I weedwack and set my mower as low as it gets. The mower gets most and the trimmer cleans it up.

Easiest – Glyphosate. It’s cheap. You can buy it concentrated and mix in a garden sprayer. You’ll still have to remove the death afterward but it won’t have living roots to hold onto the ground.

NonChemical – Fire. They sell attachments Wands that just blast a cone of fire out of the end and the hose hooks up to a tank of propane. If the weeds are green while you do this is may take a while and also depending on where you live may be a fire hazard. So be careful.

Boiling water and vinegar/salt are probably not ideal for this area based on size. It would take a ton of work. Rock salt maybe, it certainly kills spots for me over winter.

TORCH IT then take and edger and gut the shit out of it after it’s dug down blow that shit out and back fill with pea gravel ( colored or white ) and seal it

Fiiiiiyaaaaa! Gotcha a propane torch for a tank and let it rip and keep the garden hose handy for any potential issues.

Weed whack it first then light it up w a propane torch. Be careful tho bc they are illegal in some cities. Learned this when someone called the fire dept on me. Lmao

Iswear to jeebuz that I will never show you my Pokémon collection of you use herbicide. Tread carefully, mofo

Start with a flat blade shovel.  Then power washer.   A power washer ain’t gonna work unless you do the hard bit first

Brush killer. Which is weed killer. Just spray it. My sidewalk is hexagonal bricks like this. I just walk around and spray every two weeks. It gets less and less each time. Super easy.

Pressure wash and then polymeric sand

Idk man, grass provides stability, what is the benefit to removing it other than how it looks? Imagine you had a cool ass entrance with tall grass you just drive through.

Dont see it suggested yet, but a nylon wire wheel would get the job done. Like 200 string trimmers at a time.

  22. Individual_Cow7365

Power wash the hell out of it. Clean it up. Get a bunch of sand. Fill in all the gaps. Go over it with a large broom to clean up and level the sand.

    Weed torch.

    Effective and delightfully fun.

Actually, some of these are planned with the idea that grass *will* grow between the pavers and be kept at a low height to provide a pattern contrast. It’s really very stunning when done that way.

  25. GrammarGhandi23

Lift them. Clean them. And reset them. Put in proper polymeric sand.

  26. jdruffaner

Pressure wash then fill gaps with Polymeric sand. End of problem!

It looks great tbh. It’s a little high. An electric weed wacker every now and then would keep it low. People literally would pay to have what you want to destroy

  28. Spare_Laugh9953

I would use a hidro pressure cleaner and then pour a cement grout into the joints.

Crazy idea, if you don’t mind getting dirty Af while having some fun:

    Powerwash those bad boiiiis

  30. denvergardener

We had some similar weeds and grass growing in some patio stones.

I put down some black tarps over everything for a couple of months while it was still hot. Removed the tarps and everything was dead.

    Was pretty simple.

  31. You can use a weed Wacker turned at an angle and it will beat it out. Wear eye protection.

Commercial vinegar from Amazon (40%), Water, salt, dish soap

    1:1 vinegar to water

    2 Tablespoons salt per gallon

2 teaspoons dish soap per gallon.

    Weed sprayer.
