The French garden furniture market is expected to shrink by 2% in 2025, marking its fourth year of decline, according to data from Promojardin-Promanimal. Despite a promising spring boost from favourable weather and returning shoppers, sales momentum faltered in June and a late autumn rebound in October was insufficient to reverse the trend.

Performance varies by category. Heavy equipment, such as power tools, outdoor furniture, and hand tools, experienced the steepest drops due to economic caution. Plants and related products, however, remained resilient, while leisure items like barbecues and swimming pools are showing early signs of recovery.
Distribution channels are diverging: supermarkets benefit from outdoor and leisure products, DIY superstores decline sharply due to reliance on equipment sales, and garden centres and specialist stores see a moderate 2% drop, sustained by local expertise.
Consumer behaviour is shifting. While 85% of French households with outdoor spaces gardened in 2025, only 68% purchased gardening products, down from 76% in 2024. Roland Motte, president of Promojardin-Promanimal, attributes the decline to cautious household spending, a sluggish real estate market, and unpredictable weather. He emphasises that the market’s revival will depend on innovation, useful solutions, and renewed consumer appeal in both products and customer experience.
