This isn’t necessarily the species you are talking about (datura) but this is Angel trumpet vine, which belongs to the same family as it (Solanaceae)
It’s an ornamental but don’t be fooled, it’s deadly poisonous and not a trumpet you’ll ever want to play.

Yes, its called Brugmansia. Im in the Colombian countryside and it grows like a weed here, its one of the most common trees in the area.
The drug that can be extracted from it is called scopolamine.

Because almost nobody consumes Brugmansia sp. om a casual basis and nobody is foolish enough to do that, it is native to south america, good for native pollinators, then, it is good.

I believe the info that it’s a mind control tree comes from a Vice News segment about a guy who was dosing people with scopolamine to rob them. I remember seeing that video where he talks about blowing it in their face to disorient them. I think it was Vice News.
