LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – Have you ever played Roblox? Chances are, you’ve heard of the game Grow a Garden. Created in March 2025, this game has received over 34 billion visits as of the time this article was written. Jandel, the 16-year-old mastermind behind the game, has crafted a guaranteed way to keep users’ attention.
This game is a garden simulator that allows players to grow crops, pets and have a farm of their own. It mimics a real-life garden by giving real time to allow the plants to grow. Additionally, you must feed pets to activate their special abilities and give them an XP boost. You can design your garden with cosmetics, purchasable by the in-game currency known as sheckles.
With an update every two weeks, Jandel makes sure to keep players engaged. On update day, which is always Saturday at 7 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, many fun events happen. For example, “admin abuse” is struck upon gardens, which gives players a chance to collect rare mutations, cosmetics and play in new gamemodes.
Each update provides players with the possibility to collect new seeds, pets and cosmetics. Players can collect various rare items which are worth millions of sheckles. Transcendent and prismatic seeds are considered the most valuable rank of pets and items in the game and are highly sought after.
Besides the demand for certain products, the excitement for Grow a Garden also comes from its simple, nostalgic designs. For many adults, the Grow a Garden phase represents early games, with a 2000s repetitive and meditative vibe which reminds early Gen Z of games such as Animal Crossing and creates satisfaction, anticipation, and progression in the waiting for gardening. As well, Grow a Garden taps into memories of early childhood memories of tending plants and virtual pets, such as Adopt Me, Animal Jam, Club Penguin and Plants versus Zombies.
“Everyone on the Grow a Garden team has given everything to this project… blood, sweat, tears and then some…I truly believe this is a defining moment for UGC and indie gaming,” said Jandel, @jandelRblx on X.
The young creator, Jandel, crafted a vibe reminiscent of 2016 Roblox in his original designs, which he created in just a few days. The simplicity of his designs helped create a comfortable and chill community atmosphere that values simplicity and accessibility/engagement for all ages, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids.
Whether or not these marketing tactics are successful, the game is definitely a fan-favorite for all Roblox users.
“We’re shifting focus to adding more depth into farms moving forward,” said Jandel, on X.
