Hello friends!
I recently purchased a Mexican Plum from the Wildflower Center. Upon getting it in the ground and un-staking from the tightly wrapped stake it came with, I realized there's a pretty strong bend in the middle of the trunk. I tried to remove all stakes, but this little guy was floppy as all hell, so I figured staking for at least the first few months makes sense.
I initially staked with one support (image A) – this lets the trunk move around much more with the wind, but does nothing to correct the bend.
I'm currently trying two supports (image B) – this unfortunately allows much less movement by the trunk, but is holding the trunk a bit straighter.
Are my efforts to straighten this out in vain? Should I just stake with one to allow the trunk to move more + build strength, and let it grow the direction it wants to? Or will using two supports actually help train this in the direction I want it to go (aka UP).
This is the first tree I've planted, so open to all feedback/suggestions!
