I’ve got a 500 sq ft bed under a sugar maple that I need to get something planted in.
There are a few dwarf smooth hydrangeas, autumn fern and a mugo pine. None are thriving but they’re surviving.
It’s a big bed so something that will spread over time would be ideal.
Would really love to hear from people that have actually pulled off a dry shade bed and not just people guessing on what would work.
Thanks!

I have scutellaria incana, geranium maculatum, silene stellata and diervilla lonicera in dryish shady spots in Pennsylvania. not sure whether they are all native to Nashville though.
Tiarella cordifolia, foamflower does well in the shade in the root zone of a tree. Tolerates drought once established but looks and flowers best in consistently moist soils.
