No tree shows off its autumn colour quite like a Japanese maple. While they are slow growers, now is an excellent time to plant them before harsh winter weather sets in.

“They are small, deciduous trees, known for their spectacular display of bright red and orange-coloured leaves in autumn,” says Julian.

“Protect the plant from wind and direct sunlight, and keep it well-watered in summer, avoiding dry conditions.”

Plant in a sheltered spot, away from strong wind and sun.
