A team of volunteers behind the transformation of a vacant piece of land in Rhos into a vibrant community garden have received special recognition for their work.
Members of the Rhos Community Garden were commended by the Wrexham Civic Society in the Landscape and Environment Improvement Category at an awards ceremony held in St Giles Church on 20 November.
Over the last 12 months the group of volunteers and Rhos Community Council have worked to transform the once overgrown playing field at Ysgol y Wern school into a space for local residents to enjoy.
Redevelopment of the site began in November 2024 with the installation of new raised sleeper beds, tree planting and the creation of an allotment area.
Now, the patch of land has been turned into a vibrant, open space which is accessible for the whole community.
It also provides a space to grow food and help educate people about sustainability and nature.
Cllr David A Bithell Lead Member for Carbon Reduction said: “This garden wouldn’t have been possible without all the support received from all local councillors, council officers and community organisations Groundwork North Wales, Incredible Edible, Woodworks CIC, Rhos Community Council.
“Local volunteers have also worked tirelessly from the project inception and up to the point we are now.
“A big llongyfarchiadau and diolch yn fawr to all involved.”
The Rhos Community Garden has received £30,396.81 from UK Government through the Shared Prosperity Fund, as well as other funding sources.
