A popular attraction in Northumberland has had to close due to the weather. The decision to shut The Alnwick Garden, Lilidorei and The Treehouse was taken as warnings were issued for strong winds and rain.

The alerts were sent out by the Met Office as Storm Bram arrived in the UK on Tuesday morning. Ireland, Scotland, Wales and western parts of the UK were all affected.

And there were two yellow warnings in place for the North East, warning people in Northumberland and County Durham to expect gusts of up to 70mph as well as heavy showers on Tuesday, into Wednesday. ChronicleLive has been bringing all the latest weather updates here.

On Tuesday, it was announced that The Alnwick Garden and Lilidorei would close due to the weather. Tuesday’s Winter Lights and Father Christmas events were also cancelled.

People with tickets were to be contacted directly via email. And they would be able to reschedule their bookings, the operators said.

The Alnwick Garden website said: “For the safety of visitors and staff, we have made the difficult decision to close The Alnwick Garden and Lilidorei today and tonight. Tonight’s Winter Lights and Father Christmas events have been cancelled, and ticketholders will receive an email to reschedule their bookings.”

In a further message on Facebook, they said: “Due to high winds we have made the decision to close The Garden, Lilidorei and The Treehouse Tuesday 9th Decemeber. Anyone with a pre-booked ticket to Father Christmas or The Winter Lights will be contacted directly, please keep an eye on your emails.

“We will continue to monitor forecasts for Wednesday 10th Decemeber and post any updates on our social media channels. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

The Met Office has warned that “strong winds may cause some disruption during Tuesday afternoon, evening and night”. The weather experts added there could be delays on the roads and to public transport.

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges is also likely. And there could be some short term loss of power.

The Met Office added: “Southwesterly winds in association with Storm Bram will strengthen on Tuesday afternoon with the strongest winds transferring northwards from England and Wales into Scotland through the evening and night. Gusts around 50-60 mph are possible fairly widely, and potentially in excess of 70mph for some exposed headlands and high ground.”
