Spending time with the family is a key part of this time of the year, and when the weather allows it, getting outside and into the fresh air is a fantastic way to enjoy a day out together. Here in Greater Manchester we’ve got lots of amazing parks and gardens to visit at this time of the year, including one named the best to visit this winter.
A list of the UK’s best gardens to visit this winter has been curated by Bloom & Wild, as many people search for outdoor family activities. Our very own Dunham Massey was featured in the list.
This stunning estate in Altrincham is actually home to one of the largest winter gardens in the UK. It offers so much to see with colourful dogwoods, fragrant witch hazel and bright evergreens. Families can also enjoy scenic walks through a historic deer park dotted with ancient trees, fallow deer and tranquil ponds.
Until January 3 Dunham Massey is hosting its light trail, which transforms the grounds into a winter wonderland. But fun activities are available during the day too.

Families with little children can follow the Winter Walk trail with Speechly the Pineapple, which runs until March 9. Participants can collect stamps and discover seasonal surprises along the trail, while helping Speechly with the ‘pineapple post’.
If you plan a visit to the garden next month, then you’ll notice how the garden shifts as spring approaches. Bulbs start to emerge, from early Narcissus to Snowdrops, then carpets of Iris, Scilla, Crocus and Chionodoxa.

Experts at Bloom & Wild have suggested ways to make your family day out special. This includes making a scavenger hunt where you can task little ones to look out for things like acorns or pinecorns; mixing up playful moments with pauses such as walking along a trail and resting on a bench; and encouraging children to draw or photograph what they see.
