My neighborhood planted this beautiful ocotillo in a full sun planter, which is also exposed to any cold spell that might happen over winter.

I don’t know much about ocotillo’s tolerance of winter. Generally speaking, I’ve read their survival is hit and miss, trending towards miss. However, I have seen some growing around town that clearly have survived through many seasons and seem well-established. There’s one in a planter on SoCo, I saw one in a yard in north Austin, and I saw another on S. 1st. They all look excellent!

I’m curious to know if anyone knows how well these survive over winter in Austin, especially since it freezes/ices/snows at least once or twice over winter?

I’m gonna keep an eye on this one to see how the maintenance crews winterize it before our first true freeze or winter weather event!

No advice just saying I love them!

They can withstand freeze down to 10 F. If they just planted it I dont know if that’s enough time for it to establish well. Also if the soil holds too much water a strong freeze could kill it.
