Dog food is a great thing to put in your garden over the winter months to help with one thing. Gardens will be cold in December as temperatures continue to be low across the UK, including some areas where temperatures may drop below freezing over the month leading up to Christmas. This can make conditions for visitors to your garden tough.

Many people enjoy welcoming certain visitors to their gardens, even in winter. From garden birds such as robins and finches to little animals like squirrels, there are many wildlife creatures that regularly visit gardens in the UK. There are several things you can place in the garden to help attract these wonderful animals, and many are well known. But there are some things you can place in the garden that you might not realise help animals in the wintertime.

One of those things is dog food, according to experts. Garden experts at Trulawn have revealed a list of items to include in your garden to help wildlife, and dog food is among the unusual additions to the list.

According to them, dog food is a firm favourite for hedgehogs, and it will encourage them to visit your garden “again and again”. However, if there are bigger animals in the area, they might also smell it.

The experts revealed: “These little carnivores would love this on a little dish, but there is a chance bigger animals could also smell it and come a calling.”

Supporting hedgehogs is a noble thing to do, as the RSPCA has revealed that they are an endangered species in the UK. They were once common across the country, but hedgehog populations have dwindled over the decades.

Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society shares several tips for protecting hedgehogs in UK gardens. Gardeners are urged to be extra vigilant for these little creatures when strimming and cutting long grass.

Gardeners should also make sure that any water hedgehogs might drink in their garden is safe for consumption. You should also avoid slug pellets if you want to protect hedgehogs, opting for a natural slug deterrent instead.
