Staghorn fern colonies are able to practice a division of labor and reproduction, similarly to eusocial animals like ants and bees. How is plant sociality defined?

I’ve seen this study pop up about staghorn ferns several times. And I had been wondering: How is plant sociality defined?

Some plants like to grow alone, and are in poor health if they are close to another member. Other plants grow in colonies, and struggle on their own. What is the terminology for this? Are they called ‘solitary?’ or ‘colonial?’
