Our Small Backyard Garden Is Finally Coming to Life 🌱
Our small backyard transformation continues!
In this episode, we’re building raised garden beds using the hügelkultur method — turning a regular suburban yard into the start of our tiny backyard homestead.
We show how to:
Build and fill raised garden beds from the ground up
Use logs, mulch, and soil for the hügelkultur layering technique
Prepare your space for vegetable gardening and self-sufficient living
Start your own DIY backyard garden without needing a huge farm
This step-by-step backyard project shows how easy it is to turn a small backyard into a productive garden. Even though there are no plants yet, this episode lays the foundation for everything to grow — raised beds, soil, layout, and the first signs of real progress.
If you’re researching how to build a raised garden bed, how to fill garden beds cheaply, or how to start a backyard garden, this guide will help you plan your own urban homestead setup from scratch.
📅 New episodes every week as we build our backyard homestead from the ground up.

Lots of hard work with some great tips in there. Luna is so well behaved
Just finished your latest video…and it's certainly taking shape.
I loved all the practical tips for filling the boxes and the messages for the seeds.
Luna is a great addition.
Definitely fantastic.Needs lots of preparation and energy and love into this kind of project.Blessings to you two and your faithful Luna.❤
Step by step. When you put lots of love and care it will definitely comes to life. Hard work but pay off. Vegetables will grow well with lots of love and care seeing to it. Eating will be more thankful and joyful. ❤❤❤❤😊
Wow..lots of liftings & movements great workout for a start. Love the dried cones too an be used as christmas decorations as well!❤❤
I did this and the branches sprouted. I had to reach in and pull them out😂
Y'all are off to a great start! It's like many worthwhile projects, the more energy and love you put in at the beginning, the better and less hard work as time goes by.
I do want to warn you about the landscape plastic fabric. Over 20 years ago, I put landscape 'fabric' down to prevent weeds in my new flower beds. I'm still digging up and finding half buried in the dirt bits and pieces of it everywhere, even in places far from where I put it down.
I have learned a lot from people like Mark from Self Sufficient Me in Australia, Joel Salatin at Polyface Farm in Virginia, Kevin E. with Epic Gardening in San Diego, websites about homesteading from all over the States and Canada, and so many others. It is also encouraging when you find people who live in the same type of climate as you are.
I love watching Luna hop from one bed to the other, eating the dirt in the newly potted seed starting tray, and generally helping you everywhere! She is so sweet and full of life! Labrador are wonderful dogs. They shine from the heart. Best wishes for your new garden from south central Texas! 💙
Good job guys
